Sonic and Nintendo haven’t always gotten along, but now that a lot of Sonic games are on Switch, let’s see which one wins.
Sega, when it was one of the biggest video game companies, tried something very risky: they made a figure that would make Mario look old-fashioned. They chose Sonic the Hedgehog as their mascot.
Back then, it was hard to imagine Sonic on Nintendo devices. But now that Sega has stopped making consoles, the blue dog is usually found on most of Nintendo’s hardware. At the moment, the Nintendo Switch has a few Sonic the Hedgehog games. However, some are much more fun and interesting than others.
Sonic Forces
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series, Sonic Forces was made. It had a lot of good ideas, but it couldn’t make them into a fun video game that flowed well. It had both 2D and 3D stages, a character maker, and a lot more, but its technology problems and level design that was always hard to understand held it back.
One of the worst things about Sonic Forces was that it came out the same year as the praised Sonic Mania. The second game wowed people with its beautiful graphics and smooth platforming, but Sonic Forces always falls apart when it starts to pick up speed, even though it has an interesting idea at its heart.
Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020
Sonic is now on Nintendo devices, and he plays with Mario in a lot of games, such as Super Smash Bros. and Mario & Sonic at the Olympics. The first time the two characters played against each other was on the Wii. Since then, they’ve done it again every couple of years.
Sonic and Mario At The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is by far the best and most fun game in the series so far, and you can play as a lot of different Super Mario and Sonic characters. You can fight in old-school sports like Javelin Throw, Boxing, and Fencing. For some of them, you can even use the original 8-bit character sprites.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate
The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii were part of the seventh generation of video game systems. This may have been the worst time for Sonic the Hedgehog. Many of Sonic the Hedgehog’s experiences, from the 2006 game with the same name to Sonic Lost World for the Wii U, were not well accepted by both fans and reviewers.
The only one that wasn’t was Sonic Colors, a 2010 game for Wii and DS. It felt more focused than previous games, and putting gameplay over story was a good choice. The Wii version of the game was remade into Sonic Colors: Ultimate in 2021 and put out on almost all platforms. This made it possible for more fans to enjoy this surprisingly good platformer.
Team Sonic Racing
Sonic and his friends have their own style of games, similar to Mario. They can play these games when they need a break from saving the world. Games like Sonic the Fighters and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine have tried almost every genre, but the most famous spin-offs are the new racing games made by Sumo Digital.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of the best kart racing games on the Switch, but Team Sonic Racing is one of the best other kart racing games on the Switch. The story-driven storyline, 15 playable characters from the Sonic world, and enough changes to the way you play make it feel in a good way unique compared to other games in the same genre.
Sonic Frontiers
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild had a huge effect on the gaming industry, and its style and gameplay have been used as models for many other games. On the surface, Sonic Frontiers looks like another game that tries to copy the success of Breath of the Wild. However, it does a fairly good job of making Sonic’s special skills work in an open world.
After years of releasing predictable and routine Sonic games, Sonic Frontiers feels like the most original game since Sonic Adventure came out in the late 1990s. It’s really fun to run around as Sonic, and the story is full of shocks. Without a doubt, Snow Rider 3D is a big step forward for the series. If you’ve ever liked the character, you should give it a try.
Sonic Superstars
Sonic Superstars takes the best parts of the old 2D games and builds on them in interesting and sometimes shocking ways, similar to how Sonic Frontiers brought the hedgehog’s 3D adventures back to life. You should play Sonic Superstars with your friends if you miss the old Sonic games or are looking for a new game to play.
You can play Superstars by yourself or with a few friends. The game immediately grabs your attention with its stunning graphics and fun music. The tight gameplay will also test your skills. You can go on the journey as Sonic, Tails, Amy, or Knuckles. Each character has a unique skill that makes each scene fun to play.
Sonic Origins
There are many ways to play the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, such as the Sega Ages versions that are also available on Switch. However, Sonic Origins is the best way to play the first four platform games in the series. Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles have all been restored and are in Sonic Origins.
With new widescreen modes, the chance to play as either Knuckles or Tails in almost all games, and very cute new animation cutscenes, each game has gotten a lot better. The game also has an in-game museum that you can fill with collectibles that you get by doing tasks or spending coins you get between levels.
Sonic Mania
Around the same time that Sega said it would stop making devices, the quality of the Sonic series started to drop quite quickly. Maybe it’s because Sega was making games for a lot of different platforms at the same time, but most Sonic games weren’t very good for more than ten years until Sonic Mania gave the series the creative boost it had been missing.
Sonic Mania finally gave fans what they had been asking for when it came out the same year as Sonic Forces. Some of the best things about this old-school game that helped Sonic become one of the best stars of all time are the stages that change all the time, the graphics, and the music.
