Maui’s Resilience Shines: Why You Shouldn’t Cancel Your Trip

Hey there, today I’m about to share my recent experience in Maui – a trip filled with heartwarming encounters, gratitude, and a deeper appreciation for the resilience of this Hawaiian paradise.

Now, I know that when I mentioned “Maui,” some of you might’ve braced yourselves for a wave of comments. But before we go any further, let’s hit pause on the judgment and take a moment to listen.

Expressing Empathy for Lahaina

First and foremost, it’s essential to acknowledge the tragedy that has unfolded in Lahaina. Words hardly suffice to convey the depth of sorrow and loss experienced by the people of Lahaina. The grief, confusion, despair, uncertainty, and anger they must be feeling are beyond our imagination.

Over 2,000 structures, businesses, and homes have been devastated. As I recorded this, the death toll had reached 115, with numerous individuals still missing. This level of catastrophe is difficult to fathom.

Our Travel Dilemma: To Go or Not to Go

Our journey to Hawaii had been planned nearly a year in advance, centered around my son and daughter-in-law’s wedding. When the tragic events in Lahaina unfolded, we faced a tough decision – to proceed with our trip or heed the online voices urging tourists to stay away.

We decided to go but also promised ourselves that if we sensed an inappropriate emotional climate, we’d promptly return to Oahu. We started our trip on Oahu to better understand the situation in Hawaii, opting to head to Maui for the wedding.

A Grateful Welcome

What we encountered from the moment we arrived on the Valley Isle was a profound sense of appreciation. Practically everyone we met asked, “Where are you from?” and followed with heartfelt thanks for not canceling our trip.

Our resolve to continue our journey was reinforced by the messaging from Governor Josh Green, Maui Mayor Richard Bisson, Hawaii Senator Brian Schatz, and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. These voices encouraged tourists to proceed with their plans while respecting the local community.

A Resilient Spirit

The overwhelming message from the people of Maui was clear: “We take care of each other.” It’s a symbiotic relationship, a family bond known as Ohana. Tourists support the local economy, enabling residents to sustain their livelihoods.

As we spent our days in Maui, our resort began to resemble a ghost town. The beaches, pools, restaurants – all empty. Occupancy plummeted as cancellations soared. Hotel staff, whom we spoke with extensively, shared their anxieties about impending layoffs and reduced hours.

A Plea for Compassion

While it’s crucial to respect the tragedy in Lahaina, we must also refrain from compounding the crisis in West Maui. Residents there have gone through unimaginable hardships and deserve space and support.

If you have a planned trip to Maui, consider relocating to South Maui, areas like Kihei or Wailea, which are eager for visitors. Your presence can make a significant difference. But if you’re uncomfortable traveling due to the Lahaina tragedy, there are still ways to help. Donations to organizations like Maui Strong can aid the recovery process.

Supporting Local Businesses

During our stay, we made an effort to frequent local businesses. From small restaurants to roadside stands and farmers’ markets, we wanted to show our appreciation. We hope you’ll do the same, being a gracious guest, respecting the local culture, and tipping generously.

If you’re among those advocating for a temporary halt in tourism to Maui, consider directing your efforts toward contacting the Governor of Hawaii, the Mayor of Maui, or the Hawaii Tourism Authority to express your concerns constructively.

A Final Note

Tourism brings not only economic vitality but also the spirit of Aloha to Maui. While over-tourism can lead to challenges, the majority of visitors come to appreciate and respect this beautiful island. It’s a delicate balance.

In conclusion, let’s be empathetic and compassionate. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Lahaina as they rebuild their lives. As for the rest of Maui, let’s support their recovery efforts by responsibly continuing our trips, showing gratitude, and helping to restore the island’s spirit of Aloha.

So, if you’re considering flights to Maui, remember that your visit can make a meaningful impact. Embrace the beauty of this paradise and contribute to its healing journey.
