History of the Lohri Festival

This festival of Lohri has been going on since ancient times. There are many legends and stories about the origin of the Lohri festival, the most popular and famous of them is the Lohri legend of Dulla Bhatti.

 

Dulla Bhatti was very popular among the poor during the reign of Mughal king Akbar. He was known for looting rich individuals and communities and distributing it fairly among the poor. He gained immense popularity through all his works. Later, Dulla Bhatti rescues the girl from the kidnappers and takes care of the girl like his own child. Therefore the festival of Lohri is celebrated in honor of Dulla Bhatti.

 

Rituals of the Lohri Festival

  • Lohri is a famous festival in Punjab and Haryana, although it is now celebrated enthusiastically in other parts of the country as well. On this day farmers thank God, who increases crop production.

 

  • In some parts of Punjab there is also a tradition of flying kites on this day. During the Lohri festival, children go from door to door singing folk songs and people give them sweets and money.

 

  • On this day, children are given sugar, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, maize, etc. because it is believed that they should not leave home empty-handed. It is known as Lohri.

 

  • The day of Lohri (Lohri 2024), everyone gathers and lights a fire and distributes Lohri to everyone. Apart from this, everyone comes together to sing folk songs and dance.
