The progress of MIM technology in the field of human body implantation is relatively slow, mainly because the certification and acceptance of products need a longer period.
At present, MIM can produce some replacements for bone and joint parts. The main metal material used is Ti alloy.
In terms of biocompatibility, professor Chen Liangjian et al. prepared porous titanium with 60% porosity by MIM technology. They prepared gelatin sustained-release microspheres by improved condensation polymerization cross-linking method, which were coated with porous titanium.
The results showed that porous titanium coated with gelatin sustained-release microspheres had no cytotoxicity and could be used as a good material for medical implants.
Harber Metal Industrial in China has successfully used Ti-6Al-4V to produce knee sample parts for human body implantation. The implant afford main pressure after entering the human body, and has good biocompatibility. After MIM forming, hot isostatic pressing is applied, followed by shot peening, polishing and anodic oxidation to obtain better surface properties, so as to reduce the friction with human body, and improve compatibility as well as service life.
