This feature has been created to allow users to keep track of their personal information on the dark web. The dark web is notorious for being used by hackers and wrongdoers to carry out illegal activities like trading sensitive personal data.
As per Google, information such as a person’s name, birthdate, phone number, email, and other details can be at risk of being misused for criminal activities like identity theft and financial fraud. The Google Dark Web Report feature is designed to send notifications to users if their personal details are found on the dark web. This allows them to take necessary actions and increase their awareness to protect themselves from such fraudulent actions.
By enabling the dark web report option, users establish a monitoring profile where they input and select the information they wish to track. Should any pertinent data surface on the dark web, the tool notifies the user whose information is compromised and offers instructions on safeguarding that data. Regular Google users can conduct a one-time dark web check for a particular email address, but they won’t receive continuous monitoring or notifications for new searches.
According to the company’s information, Google One members have the ability to utilize the Dark Web Report to verify if their name, birthdate, and up to ten email addresses and phone numbers are found on the dark web. Furthermore, they can choose to enable real-time dark web monitoring, which provides continuous updates about recent discoveries along with suggested steps and help.

The Dark Web Report will also recognize associated information that may be uncovered through hacking attempts and data breaches. Google states that these findings will be compared with the confidential data stored in users’ monitoring profiles. The handling of data within a user’s monitoring profile follows Google’s privacy principles, and users have the option to erase or halt tracking at any time they prefer.
