From grand sagas to funny asides, these narrators change what it means to be immersed.
Most of the time, narration is used as a form of comments in the entertainment world. When it comes to video games, the storyteller is in charge of both telling the story and showing what the player does in an interesting way.
Each speech actor in a video game has their own unique voice and tone. A good storyteller can really help you get into a game, whether it’s the player character’s thoughts or an inanimate object watching what you do. Even though there are a lot of great voice artists who do narration for video games, these are the best.
Thomas Was Alone – Danny Wallace
Mike Bithell made Thomas Was Alone, a flash-based computer game that came out in 2010. The game is a platform puzzler where you handle several squares, each of which has its own name and personality. The game’s announcer is voiced by comic Danny Wallace; the squares don’t talk.
During the trip, the storyteller gives everything you do meaning and gives what are basically flat squares a shocking amount of personality. Wallace won a BAFTA award for his act, which was praised by many people.
Portal – Ellen McLain
Valve has made a lot of well-known games, but the Portal series is one of the most famous and loved. The games are mostly known for having great puzzles, and the voice acting is also very good. The AI GLaDOS is the most interesting figure in the series.
Glideros, who is voiced by Ellen McLain, has become the series’s main voice and one of the most recognized sounds in video games. McLain was cast as the Jaeger pilot AI in Guillermo Del Toro’s 2013 movie Pacific Rim because of her work as GLaDOS.
Bastion – Logan Cunningham
If you want to play games with weird and creative plots, you only need to look at independent games. Indie games give creators full artistic freedom because they aren’t limited by the usual rules of triple-A products. Bastion is one of the most unique independent albums of the 2010s.
This is Bastion, a 2D isometric fantasy action game made by Supergiant Games that follows the travels of “the Kid.” You are lucky to have commentary throughout the game by Logan Cunningham, who does a delightfully excellent job.
Battleblock Theater – Will Stamper
Battleblock Theater, which came out in 2013, was The Behemoth’s third game. Like their first two games, it’s both funny and fun. The writing and graphics are a big part of the fun, but the game’s natural charm comes from the narrator who is always there.
The narrator, whose voice is done by Will Stamper, keeps the story going and says some of the funniest things in the game. The thrilling minute-to-minute gameplay may be the main attraction, but Stamper’s work is truly outstanding.
The Stanley Parable – Kevan Brighting
When The Stanley Parable first came out, it got great reviews from people who write about games. The game started out as a free mod for Valve’s highly praised Half-Life 2. Davey Wreden and Willam Pugh finally released it as a separate remake using the source engine.
The Stanley Parable is mostly about the connection between two people: the storyteller and the title character, Stanley, who stays silent. The narrator, whose voice was done so well by Kevan Brighting, gives you both snarky jabs and dull support as you make decisions and solve problems.
Max Payne 3 – James McCaffrey
The Grand Theft Auto series may be what Rockstar is best known for, but they also made the highly praised Max Payne 3. Even though the gunplay is great, James McCaffrey’s acting as the title character might be the best part.
Even though McCaffrey does a great job in all three games in the series, his performance in Max Payne 3 is truly amazing. Max’s inner conversations give us a fascinating look into his disturbed mind as he tries to figure out why he does terrible things.
Call of Juarez Gunslinger – John Cygan
The Call of Juarez games from Techland have a lot of ups and downs. A great main character was an important part of the games that they always fell short on. That changed when Call of Juarez: Gunslinger came out in 2013. It was the best game in the series.
The hero of Gunslinger is a bounty hunter named Silas Greaves, whose voice is done so well by John Cygan. During Space Bar Clicker, you take on Greaves’ many adventures as he hunts criminals in the Wild West. Greaves is likeable whether he makes the truth more dramatic or makes people around him more humble.
Divinity Original Sin 2 – Brian Bowles
Before Baldur’s Gate 3, which made Larian Studios even more famous and successful, the skilled writers were still making great RPGs. There were a lot of ways that Divinity: Original Sin 2 was like Baldur’s Gate 3, especially the way the story was told.
The voice of Divinity: Original Sin 2’s voiced-over character comes from actor Brian Bowles. The way the game is set up makes players use their imaginations a lot more, which is easy to do with Bowle’s memorization skills.
Baldur’s Gate 3 – Amelia Tyler
Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studio blew up in the game world. Everyone loved the long-awaited follow up to Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn. They liked the story, the characters, the writing, and, of course, the voice acting.
Even though the whole group is great, Amelia Tyler’s role as the constant storyteller is what makes Baldur’s Gate 3 so great. She is famous for playing Malady in Divinity Original Sin 2, which was made by Larian Studio. Now, fans all over the world love her as the announcer.
Fallout – Ron Perlman
If you’re looking for one of the most famous voice artists in show business, Ron Perlman might be it. Perlman has the kind of movies that have made him a star as an actor. He is known all over the world for his voice work and live-action parts.
Perlman does a lot of great voice work, but his part as the Fallout announcer is one of his most famous. Not having the most lines, the narrator starts in the first Fallout game and ends with New Vegas. But Perlman’s voice and eerie lines make this performance one to remember.
