Kia Carens- All You Need To Know

The Kia Carens is an affordable feature-packed MUV offered by Kia India. Among Kia cars, the Carens’ aggressive pricing has positioned itself between the entry-level Kia Sonet (sub-compact SUV) and Kia Seltos (compact SUV).

In terms of pricing, the Kia Carens takes the likes of the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Innova Crysta, and some variants of the Innova HyCross.

Further, the Kia Carens has a starting price of Rs 10.45 lakh. So, let’s see what offerings this MUV has on offer.  Let’s read on, then.

Specifications

As far as the specifications are concerned, the Kia Carens is underpinned by the Hyundai-Kia K2 platform that also underpins Kia’s Seltos and Sonet, and Hyundai’s Alcazar, Creta, Venue, and the i20.

Apart from that, the Kia Carens has three engine options: a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel unit. For your reference, the 2023 Kia Carens received a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, which replaced the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit.

However, as for the figures, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine is tuned to churn out 113 bhp at 6300 rpm and 144 Nm of peak torque at 4500 rpm. Further, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit can generate 158 bhp at 5500 rpm and 253 Nm of peak torque at 3500 rpm.

Finally, comes the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel mill that can produce 113 bhp at 4000 rpm and 250 Nm of peak torque at 2750 rpm.

In terms of transmissions, the options include an iMT, a seven-speed DCT, and a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. You can, however, check out the variant-wise Carens price list on the autoX website.

The fuel tank capacity is kept standard across the variants.

Besides that, the Kia Carens’ mileage ranges between 16 km/l and 21 km/l. These are ARAI-claimed figures. Please note that the mileage can vary with the engine and transmission combinations, the local traffic conditions and individuals’ driving styles.

Suspension, Brakes and Tyres

Before we begin, it is worth noting that the majority of locally-produced vehicles in India are engineered by keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind. That said, the Kia Carens stands on a widely used McPherson Strut with a coil spring at the front and a coupled torsion beam axle with a coil spring at the rear. As mentioned earlier, it should be safe to say that the Kia Carens will soak the bumps from potholes and absorb the undulations with ease. However, you can check out the Kia cars review here.

Further, the braking duties are taken care of by all-disc brakes.

And, as per the variant chosen, the lower variants of the Kia Carens will run on steel rims, while the higher variants will run on alloy rims. Plus, the tyre profiles will also vary. The variants with steel rims have a tyre profile of 195/65 R15, while the variants with alloy rims have a tyre profile of 205/65 R16.

The spare tyre (also called stepney in some countries) is a steel rim.

Safety Features

On the safety front, the Kia Carens is fully loaded. It has ABS with EBD, an emergency brake light flashing, a tyre pressure monitoring system, child-seat anchorages, six airbags, and a speed-sensing door lock. It is also equipped with traction control, hill-hold control, hill descent control, brake assist, and ESP. Further, it packs cruise control, parking sensors (front and rear), a reverse camera with guidance, and an auto-dimming IRVM, to name a few.
